Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking
Follow the footsteps of some of the greatest mountaineers -- Tenzing and Hillary passed this way on their epic climb of Mt Everest in 1953. The Everest trek is second only to the Annapurna trek in popularity: This route provides a natural means of acclimatizing and at the same time you will pass through regions of diverse cultures. Jiri is a 10 to 12 hr drive away from Kathmandu.

The 1st day's trek leads you to Bhandar through Deorali, which is a pass at 2,705m. The 2nd day you reach Sete crossing the Likhu Khola (khola = river). There are three bridges to cross. The grey langurs found in this region are a great sight to see. You are now in Sherpa country. The third day finds you in the famous village of Junbesi. The route passes through forests made up largely of rhododendron, magnolia, maple and birch. You also cross the Lamjura pass at 3530m, the highest point on the trek from Jiri to Namche Bazaar. From here it is downhill to Junbesi. Up next on your trail is Nuntala (2,320m) on the 4th day. You then cross the Dudh Kosi river and reach Khari Khola or carry on to Bupsa on the 5th day. On the 7th day you reach Phakding coming across the shaggy yaks that carry loads in these high altitude regions of Nepal. You will also see Lukla airstrip surrounded by a multitude of lodges. Climb up to Phakding at 2,800m where there are many lodges. You will reach famous Namche Bazaar on the 9th day. These days it even has pool tables for recreation. Acclimatisation is a must before proceeding further up. Short hikes to higher altitudes and back is the best means to acclimatise. On day 10 you reach Tengboche. At Tengboche Monastery (3,870m) you are greeted by a superb view of the Himalayas that includes Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Thanserku and more. The next stop is at Pheriche on the 11th day. From Pheriche you reach Lobuche on the 12th day. Enjoying the view of Pumo Ri walk on to Gorakshep at (5100m) which is the last campsite. Climb up Kala Pathar and you will get the best view of Everest, which is a kind of reward for the difficult climb. Finally passing near a lake onto a glacier you will find yourself between the giant peaks Nuptse and Pumo Ri. Pass through pinnacles and plateaus and you arrive at the Everest Base Camp.

You could start your trek from Lukla by taking a short flight in the early morning and shorten the trek by 8 days. Lukla airport has recently been black topped.

You can either trek back or take the short flight back.
